March brought its fair share of challenges to Bridge City, with heavy rainfall contributing to an increase in litter washed into the precinct from surrounding areas. Despite this, our Green Africa team remained proactive and committed, ensuring the cleanliness and upkeep of the area were not compromised.
Tackling Litter and Stormwater Debris
Green Africa collected an impressive 800 bags of litter during the month. The rain intensified the usual cleaning demands, with waste flowing into Bridge City via stormwater drains and runoff. The team responded swiftly, prioritising public areas and keeping walkways, roadsides and green spaces neat and safe for all users.
Scheduled Maintenance and Embankment Clearing
Among the key highlights of Green Africa’s scheduled work this month was the cutting and clearing of embankments around the gabion structures, critical for managing water flow and erosion.

The team also carried out bush clearing along Torvale Crescent, improving visibility and overall precinct aesthetics.

These tasks are part of ongoing efforts to ensure the precinct’s green infrastructure—such as retaining structures, verges, and open spaces—remains in good condition, especially during and after the rainy season.
Dedicated Cleaning Support at the ETA Taxi Rank
In a long-awaited and much-needed development, Durban Solid Waste (DSW) deployed 13 PEP (Public Employment Programme) staff members to the ETA temporary taxi rank facility earlier this month. This follows ongoing communication between the Bridge City Management Association (MA) team, DSW, and eThekwini Transport Authority (ETA) to improve the upkeep of this high-traffic area.
Since 2022, the space had suffered from a lack of dedicated cleaning services, leading to a visible decline in conditions. With DSW’s intervention, the area is now being cleaned six days a week (Monday to Saturday)—a significant step towards restoring cleanliness and order in this essential commuter zone.

Looking Ahead
As we transition out of the rainy season, maintenance will continue to focus on vegetation control, stormwater management, and keeping key public spaces clean and functional. We’re encouraged by the joint efforts of the municipal departments and our precinct teams, and we look forward to building on this momentum in the months ahead.
We thank all teams and partners for their dedication to maintaining Bridge City as a well-managed, clean, and accessible environment.
