Bridge City continues to benefit from ongoing collaboration with municipal departments and Metro Police, with focused efforts throughout March aimed at improving infrastructure functionality, public safety and the overall cleanliness of the precinct.
Streetlight Repairs: Improving Safety Through Visibility
Functional street lighting is essential for both safety and security, particularly in high-traffic areas. As of March, 108 out of 154 streetlights in the precinct are operational, representing a 70% functionality rate. While progress has been made, the Bridge City Management Association (BCMA) is actively working to improve this figure.
The necessary replacement stock has been ordered, and the MA continues to engage with the eThekwini Transport Authority’s Street Lighting Department to prioritise repairs and ensure faster turnaround times. Full streetlight functionality remains a key goal to enhance nighttime visibility, improve motorist and pedestrian safety, and deter unwanted activity in the precinct.
Metro Police Presence Enhancing Compliance and Order
The ongoing presence of Metro Police has had a tangible impact on the precinct, particularly in maintaining order and improving motorist behaviour. Their regular patrols and visibility have been instrumental in deterring illegal parking and ensuring general compliance with traffic and by-law regulations.
This sustained enforcement contributes to a safer and more orderly environment for all precinct users—particularly around transport nodes and commercial areas that experience high foot and vehicle traffic.
PEP Deployment at the Temporary Taxi Rank Facility
A major development this month was the deployment of 13 PEP (Public Employment Programme) staff members by Durban Solid Waste (DSW) to manage cleaning at the temporary taxi rank facility adjacent to Bridge City Mall.
This improvement follows active engagement between the MA, DSW, and eThekwini Transport Authority (ETA), after recognising that the area had long been underserved in terms of regular cleaning. With the new cleaning team in place, the facility now receives daily upkeep, significantly improving its cleanliness and overall usability for the thousands of commuters who pass through each day.

Efforts will continue into April with a focus on restoring full streetlight functionality, maintaining law enforcement presence, and monitoring the long-term effectiveness of cleaning operations at the taxi rank. These initiatives are vital in supporting the safety, cleanliness and overall functionality of Bridge City.
