Durban is gearing up for the R5 million record stake at the Hollywoodbets Durban July horseracing event taking place on 1 July at the Greyville Racecourse. The event injects over R300 million into the City’s economy and creates job and other opportunities in related value chains.
There will be a variety of marquees including the Glenlivet Jazztown, Boomtown, Afrotainment, Pegasus Lounge, and many more at the event.
Fashion is another important part of the July experience. This year’s theme is ‘Show me the honey’. Emerging local fashion designers will benefit from the various development competitions facilitated in collaboration with the City’s Fashion Development Programme under the Business Support, Tourism, Markets and Agri-Business Unit and Hollywoodbets Foundation.
Over 110 entries were received for the Durban Young Designers Award which showcases talent from design colleges and technikons across KwaZulu-Natal. The Durban Fashion Fair Rising Stars Collection provides a glimpse of Durban’s hottest emerging design talent. As a precursor to the Durban July, there will be a preview showcase for industry role players and potential buyers.
As a build-up to Africa’s greatest horserace, Durban Tourism staff visited Gauteng and the Western Cape to promote the horseracing event and other attractions the City has to offer. Activations were held in high foot traffic venues, such as malls, from 10 to 12 June were the Hollywoodbets Durban July, travel packages, and the Durban winter season campaign were highlighted. The campaign was a success as the public responded well to the information shared.
The roadshows aim to attract visitors to the City for upcoming events. This includes highlighting that the City will extend the July experience to satellite venues to accommodate visitors. This is due to COVID-19 regulations which restricts tickets sales at Greyville Racecourse. Magaba Lounge, Mojo’s Carwash and Shisanyama, Max’s Lifestyle, Under the Moon, and Maqaqa Lounge Lifestyle are venues where a fashion element, entertainment, and online betting for patrons will be on offer during the event.
